staff preliminary recommendation: ISOC to manage .ORG ISOC's Response to the ICANN Preliminary Report FAQ- updated 23 August, 2002 ALL ABOUT ISOC'S BID FOR .ORGISOC has submitted a bid to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) (http://www.icann.org) to succeed VeriSign Global Registry Services, Inc. as the registry operator for the .ORG top-level domain (TLD). Managing .ORG would provide an exciting opportunity for us to enhance and extend our mission, which is to ensure the open development of the Internet for people throughout the world. For over 10 years, ISOC has been involved in education and training efforts all over the globe to increase Internet usage. Winning the bid would allow us to expand those efforts for the benefit of all Internet users while at the same time allowing .ORG to fully reach its potential as the unique domain of global noncommercial interests. Our goal in making the bid is to help the world's charitable, scientific and civic organizations take full advantage of Internet-based technologies. ISOC's global network, industry expertise and credibility with the noncommercial community will allow .ORG to embrace its mission with a renewed vision and momentum. We will create a new .ORG Advisory Council to focus solely on .ORG issues, to be made up of leadership from the broad spectrum of the noncommercial world. We propose innovative programs and products to address serious problems that plague the domain name industry in general and the noncommercial community specifically. Finally, we also propose a number of specific benefits to .ORG users which will encourage them to use the Internet more effectively including extra "helping hand" services (www.isoc.org/dotorg/bid/section7.html#c35). If ISOC's proposal is accepted by ICANN, ISOC will form a not-for-profit corporation, Public Interest Registry (PIR), which will operate as a fully separate corporation. ISOC has entered into an agreement with Afilias Limited, a global registry services provider, to provide PIR with a full range of back-end registry services if it is awarded the .ORG registry.
