ICANN at the moment is seeking for a successor of VeriSign, the current registry for .org. The Internet Society now made a proposal for .org, stating that ISOC plans to found a Non-Profit Organization to manage .org.

The new company, PIR, will be independent. All backend service are to be managed by Afilias Ltd., a global company for registry services

ICANN ist gegenwärtig auf der Suche nach einem Nachfolger von VeriSign, die bisher als Registry die .org-Domain verwaltet hat. Die Internet Society (ISOC) hat der ICANN jetzt ein Angebot vorgelegt. Danach plant die ISOC die Gründung einer Nonprofit-Organisation. Die Non-Profit Organisation soll unter dem Namen Public Interest Registry (PIR) als selbständiges Unternehmen arbeiten. Sämtliche Backend Registry Services sollen im Fall der Annahme des Gebots von Afilias Ltd., einem globalen Anbieter von Diensten zur Vergabe von Domainnamen, übernommen werden. Die Entscheidung der ICANN bezüglich der Nachfolge der .org-Verwaltung wird für August 2002 erwartet.
