ISOC Fellowship to the IETF
Returning ISOC Fellowship to the IETF Programme
Why a Returning Fellowship?
Attending an IETF meeting for the first time provides its own set of benefits and opportunities, including meeting people who have contributed to Working Group (WG) mailing lists, learning how the IETF works, and deciding how to participate in the future. Experiencing an IETF in person generally increases an individual’s tendency to participate in and contribute to IETF work in the future.
With so many benefits provided in a first time fellowship to the IETF, ISOC believes that a chance to attend another meeting, as a Returning Fellow, will over time help build communities in developing countries by providing easier access to the IETF standards development process and increase the visibility of the IETF in developing countries.
Goals of the Returning Fellowship Programme
ISOC created the returning fellowship as a means to:
- Provide an opportunity for highly committed Fellowship Alumni to return to the IETF to advance specific standards work
- More fully integrate technologists from the developing world into the IETF and
- Advance the technical leadership potential of individuals from the developing world.
The Returning Fellowship
The Returning Fellowship Programme provides the opportunity to a select ISOC Fellowship to the IETF alumni to attend another IETF meeting. ISOC invites alumni to apply who wish to actively participate in and contribute to the work of the IETF, and feel that attending another meeting in person is essential to their own professional development and local community. Similar to the original Fellowship, the Returning Fellowship provides the following support to participants:
- A round-trip, economy class airline ticket to attend the meeting
- Hotel accommodation for the duration of the meeting
- IETF meeting registration fees
- The fee for the IETF Social Event, and
- A US$400 stipend to offset incidental expenses (such as meals not provided as part of the IETF meeting, ground transportation, related expenses, etc). The stipend is paid to the Fellow only upon arrival at the meeting
- A certificate of participation after successfully participating in the Returning Fellowship to the IETF
A Returning Fellowship award will not be given to the same individual twice in one calendar year.
At each IETF meeting ISOC can support up to 5 returning fellows.
