| Creating
Online Communities of Medical Knowledge and Trust: Tales from Two
Continents |
| People
with cancer and African malaria researchers: what do they have in
common? They are communities of users or potential users of communications
technology as tools to a greater good. These same people are often
isolated from one another and from useful resources by geography,
distance, and disease in industrialized and rural areas behind barriers
erected by fear, hierarchies, and the remnants of colonial empires.
Who are these users? What are the technologies that support them?
Where are they in the broad scheme of development and how are they
creating new paradigms - new ways of doing science, new ways of dealing
with disease? |

| Questioning
the Telecenter Movement |
| Telecenters
or community technology centers have been providing public access
to computing and networked resources for more than 30 years, but in
the past few years thousands of pilot projects, franchises, and grass
roots efforts have been opening their doors in urban and rural areas
all over the world. This panel will look at the challenges, the hype,
the successes and failures of the different models. |

| Future
Uses of the Internet |
| This
session brings together people within public and private R&D structures,
who are active in trying to identify, experiment and evaluate future
Internet uses based on broadband, mobile and pervasive access, new
user interfaces and terminals, etc. It will allow participants to
exchange visions of where Internet uses will go, but also of how we
can help these uses emerge and how experiments and evaluation methods
should allow users to self-appropriate technological innovation in
unforeseen ways. |
