In the end of 1993, a call for tender for running the DE-NIC was issued.
This call for tender was mainly based on the draft, the DE-NIC commission of DIGI had developed.
There were seven applications for this CFT, ranging from universities and research institutes to commercial companies. This proved, that not only Internet technology became widespread in the commercial world, but even core Internet services could be delivered by them.
The IV-DENIC set up guidelines on how to evaluate the applications. Those guidelines included:
The IV-DENIC interviewed some of the applicants and awarded the contract to the University of Karlsruhe, which is running the DE-NIC since beginning of 1994.
This contract runs for 3 years, so the DE-NIC is secured until end of 1996, at least.
