Document Management, Digital Libraries and the Web

Masinter, Larry ( masinter@parc.xerox.com)

Abstract

Document management systems are used by office workgroups and enterprises to organize and keep track of the valuable intellectual property assets of their organizations. Digital Library technology is being developed by many organizations as a way of making the world's knowledge available through computers and communication technology. The World-Wide Web is an Internet application being used by companies and other organizations for promoting their products, doing electronic commerce, and providing information to the vast number of Internet users around the world. These three applications share technology elements, but also have critical differences. The talk notes the common elements, some of the technical issues common to them all, and explores the opportunities for synergy when these applications merge.
