Internationally Renowed Internet Experts Lead INET 97 Tutorials Delivering Valuable Information On Technological, Educational and Commercial Applications

Washington, D.C. -- April 25, 1997 -- Internationally recognized Internet experts will lead seven distinctive day-long tutorials at the Internet Society's seventh annual INET conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June 23-24, 1997. These pragmatic, low cost and comprehensive tutorials will present in-depth, cutting-edge information on current and emerging technologies. The tutorials are designed to enhance that attendee's professional development and to compliment the INET 97 conference.

"INET 97's tutorial content is both clearly focused and in-depth making them appropriate for every level of professional facing the emerging global Internet society," said Donald M. Heath, President and CEO of the Internet Society. "The instructors are of such exemplary quality, in terms of knowledge and experience, that each tutorial will enable learners to implement or enhance their current Internet situation - no matter what its level." Tutorials are especially appropriate for managers, technical staff, network management, and administrators.

Costs for the tutorials are intentionally kept low to encourage greater participation from a broad range of international Internet professionals. The cost for ISOC members is US$175.00 for each tutorial and US$195.00 for non-ISOC members.

The Tutorials are: Design of Web Proxies and Caches, a technical tutorial on caching software; Distance Learning Implementation: What You Shouldn't Overlook, everything you need to know to implement a distance learning program; Internet for Business, the business case for a commercial Internet site; Internationalization of the Internet, multiple language Internet sites; Cryptography, Security, and Privacy for Networks and Distributed Systems, an overview of security and privacy issues and technology; Intranet Planning, the business case with technological overview; and Mobile Computing, covering mobile computing protocol technology.

The Internet Society is the international organization for global coordination and cooperation of the Internet and is the sponsor of INET'97, premier global Internet conference. INET'97 will include presentations of more than 100 papers and case histories, plenary sessions and panels on key Internet issues, and a wide range of seminars. More than 3,000 information technology professionals, business executives, educators and government officials from around the world are expected to attend.

Tutorial Details:

1. Design of Web Proxies and Caches led by Stewart Forster, Senior Systems Programmer/Software Developer, Victoria, Australia -- Monday, June 23. This tutorial will focus on the 'care and feeding' of proxy web caches with a strong focus on the publicly available Squid proxy cache software. This technical tutorial is for professionals with general system management experience. Learners will be introduced to caching, the squid cache software, it's features and functionality. Other tutorial contents will include rightsizing hardware for intended load, optimizing parameters, security, remote maintenance and statistics gathering and reporting, and finally future trends in caching. Participants will be able to set up and maintain a proxy web cache of their own. Web caching may provide with substantial savings of up to 60% of external Web based bandwidth costs as well as substantial speedups of Web transfers providing large benefits for companies. This tutorial is recommended for current and future proxy web cache maintainers who are looking to save money on bandwidth costs through web caching technology.

2. Distance Learning Implementation: What You Shouldn't Overlook, with David Lassner, Director of Information Technology and Hae Okimoto, Manager of Distance Learning and Instructional Technology at the University of Hawaii -- Monday, June 23. Distance learning offers tremendous opportunities to break down the barriers of place and time that have traditionally limited access to education. This tutorial is intended for management and staff who are planning or implementing distance learning projects. The key issues covered in this tutorial will include: planning, costs and benefits, quality, policy frameworks, instructor training, student support, assessment and technology with the goal being to prepare participants to establish or enhance distance learning programs at their home institutions.

3. Internet for Business with Tony Freeth, Internet Business Services, Ltd., Glasgow, Scotland and Gordon Howell, Director of Consulting Services, Internet Business Services Ltd. -- Monday, June 23. This workshop will prepare learners to create a methodology for determining the business case for Intranet and Internet applications. Targeted to CEOs, strategy policy makers, business development managers, marketing professionals, business process executives and IT managers planning Internet deployment, the course will draw from real life case studies to help attendees: understand Internet technology from the business perspective, learn and adopt a methodology for modeling Internet applications, obtain reference case study examples to anchor the theory, locate opportunities and priorities for Internet deployment and utilization. Attendees will come to appreciate current and future business use of the Internet, be able to analyze the tangible and intangible benefits and costs of introducing Internet technology, and will learn to develop an Internet deployment plan.

4. Internationalization of the Internet with Francois Yergeau, Senior Technology Advisor, Alis Technologies, Inc., Montreal, Canada and Martin Duerst, Senior Research Assistant, Multimedia Laboratory, Department of Computer Science, University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland -- Monday, June 23. This tutorial will discuss the enabling and use of multiple languages and scripts on the Internet including WWW, email, FTP, the Domain Name System, character sets, directories (LDAP) and more for participants interested in setting up and operating international Internet sites.

5. Cryptography, Security, and Privacy for Networks and Distributed Systems with Charlie Catlett, Associate Director, Computing and Communications, National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Champaign, IL., USA -- Tuesday, June 24. This tutorial will provide an overview of the elements of computer security and privacy including technology, protocols to construct secure and private services and systems, and applications of current offerings like Java, Kerberos, PGP and others.

6. Intranet Planning with Gordon Howell, Director of Consulting Services, Internet Business Services, Ltd., Glasgow, Scotland and Tony Freeth -- Tuesday, June 24. This tutorial will introduce the key issues corporations will face when implementing new IT systems using Internet technologies. Participants will learn about intranet business rationales, architectures, best practices, technologies, applications, development, deployment, procurement, platforms, products, key vendors and future trends. Following the tutorial, attendees will be able to make a business case for use of intranet, identify starting points and action plans, understand intranet technologies and identify key products and vendors.

7. Mobile Computing with Charlie Perkins, Senior Staff Engineer, Sun Microsystems, Mountain View, USA -- Tuesday, June 24. This tutorial will discuss mobile computing protocol technology using Internet Protocol and other standards to aid seamless and transparent mobility. Protocols, technology, applications and processes that further enhance mobile computing's effectiveness as a business tool will be explored.
