What is INET? Participants at each INET include leading Internet practitioners, users,commercial and governmental policy/decision-makers, and many of the world'sleading developers. The influence and seniority of these participants iswell-known.
The first INET conference was held in 1991, when an estimated 4 millionpeople had access to the Internet, most of whom were based at academic/researchinstitutions. By 1997 that number has risen to57 million people. The demographicprofile of these people has changed significantly. Today we see a populationof well-educated users with above-average disposable income, a more professionalprofile, many of whom now access the Internet from their commercial offices.At the same time, the number of countries with access to the Internet hasgrown considerably. The nature of the INET conferences has reflected these changes, includinggrowth.
