INET'98 Tours

The Internet Society has arranged a slate of pre- and post-conference tours and cultural activities for INET'98 participants and accompanying persons prior, during and after the conference. A bilingual guide will accompany participants during the excursions. A full description of the tours, including prices, can be viewed below.

OLYMPIC MUSEUM

2 hours, from 08:30 to 12:30
Date: 22 July 1998; Price: CHF 49.-

The Olympic Museum in Lausanne occupies a magnificent site on the Lake of Geneva. The museum is built on the theme of the unity of sport, art and culture, a multitude of discoveries spanning from ancient Greece to modern times. The most memorable moving monuments in Olympic competition are shown in vivid sound and pictures.

 

GENEVA CITY TOUR

3 hours, from 09:00 to 12:00
Daily; Price: CHF 34.-

Discover the magnificent lakeshore and the famous 140 meter high water fountain, the symbol of Geneva. Visit the quayside, the outstanding parks, the international organisations area and the shopping streets before strolling through the old town with its wealth of monuments and curiosities.

 

LAKE CRUISE

1 hour, from 14:00 to 15:00
Daily; Price: CHF 15.-

Get to know the Lake of Geneva in one of the splendid lake steamers and enjoy watching the magnificent landscape glide gently by. Sailing boats, windsurfers and water-skiers provide live entertainment on the sparkling blue waters against a background of vineyards and snow-capped mountain peaks.

 

CHILLON AND GRUYERES

1 day guided tour, from 09:00 to 18:00
Date: 21 July 1998; Price: CHF 44.-

Passing across Lausanne on the motor-way, you will be driven through the country-side to reach the Castle of Chillon at the Lake of Geneva. A guided tour is organised to reveal the past of this castle. After this tour, you will take the motor-way to reach Gruyères to stroll around in the medieval village followed by a visit of a cheese factory.

 

RED CROSS MUSEUM TOUR

3 hours guided tour, from 14:00 to 17:00

Guided tour at the impressive International Red Cross Museum to learn about their successes and failures.

 

CHAMONIX MONT-BLANC

1 day guided tour, from 08:00 to 18:00
Daily; Price: CHF 89.-

A 90 minute drive by motor-coach through the picturesque Arve Valley takes you from Geneva to Chamonix, one of the most famous mountain villages at the foot of the remarkable and majestic Mont-Blanc. In Chamonix, you may take a two-stage cable car that brings you to the Aiguille du Midi, a rocky peak close to the Mont-Blanc. This summit offers unique panoramic views of the Chamonix Valley and major peaks of the French, Swiss and Italian Alps. Don't forget your passport.

 

INTERLAKEN

Week-end / Overnight excursion; departure from Geneva Saturday, 25 July at 08:00; return to Geneva Sunday, 26 July at 18:00; Price: CHF 345.- including 4-star hotel and breakfast

Interlaken is the central point of the Bernese Oberland and lies in the heart of Switzerland and of Europe, nestling between the lakes of Thun and the Brienz, at the foot of the world-famous peaks Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Interlaken's unique situation and the natural beauties of its surroundings, its favourable climate, and the vast variety of its sports, and entertainment have made the world-famous holiday resort what it is today.

 

ANNECY AND LYON

Enjoy a half-day tour of Annecy, an attractive little town on the border of the Lake of Annecy with a smart old town. During the second part of the day, enjoy the city of Lyon with its historical monuments and its well known restaurants and food. Don't forget your passport.

 

GENEVA COUNTRYSIDE

4 hours, from 14:00 to 18:00
Date: 22 July 1998; Price: CHF 39.-

Travel by private coach through the different landscape ranges of the Geneva region, full of charm and history, with the vineyards, the fortified houses and the castles. An excellent complement to the City Tour, ideal for romantic souls.

 

SWISS CHOCOLATE FIRM VISIT

2 hour guided tour, from 13:30 to 16:00
Date: 20 July 1998; Price : CHF 38.-

RAPP, situated 20km from Geneva in Nyon, is a well-known firm for chocolate and production of pastries. Their chocolate production is original, not industrial. Visitors will hear about the history of the firm, sample chocolate and visit the Tea Room.
