Whitman and Debra Chrapaty, president and COO of E*TRADE Technologies, are among the online commerce experts revealing the latest developments and keys to succeeding in the electronic marketplace at INET'99 being held June 22 - 25 in San Jose, California. "The Internet is enabling individuals and small businesses to sell their products and services alongside large companies and beyond their own geographical regions," says Whitman, who brought to eBay years of marketing experience working for such companies as FTD, Hasbro, Disney and Stride Rite. "Through online commerce and virtual communities, the Internet is empowering businesses and individuals from every corner of the world to compete in an open marketplace and improve their lives." Whitman has helped eBay grow from a community of 80,000 to nearly 3.8 million registered users. In 1998, users have bought and sold on an annual basis $1.2 billion in gross merchandise sales, making eBay the largest consumer commerce site on the web.
