From serving as the first state capital of California to becoming the Capital of Silicon Valley, San Jose has distinguished itself as a city with a pioneering past and enterprising future. California's oldest civil settlement, San Jose was founded in 1777 as El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe to raise crops to feed soldiers camped at the presidios of Monterey and San Francisco. In 1849, it became California's first state capital. And in March 1850, the settlement officially became the City of San Jose. Although San Jose's roots are in agriculture, today, as the "Capital of Silicon Valley," the city is better known for its rich harvest of innovative technology. San Jose is conveniently located midway between San Francisco and the Monterey/Carmel area at the sunny southern end of San Francisco Bay. The ocean, the mountains, and many other attractions are just a short drive away. For more information on San Jose, see http://www.sanjose.org.
