Frequently Asked Questions

Who can form a Chapter?
Any ISOC Global Member in good standing may submit an application for a Chapter.

How many people are needed to form a chapter?
A Chapter needs to have at least 25 members in order to be chartered. The first 25 members of your Chapter may not be one of the first 25 members of some other Chapter. They do not need to be members when you apply to form the Chapter. You will have time to recruit the members you need.

Can any person join a Chapter?
The only requirement is that each Chapter member must also be at least an ISOC Global Member. However, membership is not required to participate in the activities of a Chapter or the Society.

How do we find other members who might want to join a Chapter?
ISOC announces all Chapter applications to the membership-at-large and suggests that interested members contact you directly. You may also recruit non-members to join ISOC.

Can there be more than one Chapter serving the same community of interest?
Chapters are not Chartered with exclusive "rights" to a community of interest so it is permitted. However, in general, unless there is a demonstrated need, it is unlikely. For example, if a Chapter is too large to manage with the resources available to it then a second Chapter may be considered.

Can organisations join a Chapter?
Yes. Chapters are encouraged to create membership models that attract organisations local to their community of interest.

How much extra does it cost to join a Chapter?
There is no fee charged by ISOC to join a Chapter. A Chapter may choose to charge a fee as part of its membership model or to charge a fee for participation in its activities. Since a Chapter does need some resources to support its activities, you should expect either to get resources donated as needed or to charge a fee.
