MeetingsOne Web Day" planning and brainstorming meetingsNotes taken by Anne Lord Group 1 UTC 10.30, July 26thPresent: Christopher Wilkinson, ISOC Wallonie Introductions and welcomeTerry Monroe welcomed the chapter delegates. There was a round table of introductions. Terry explained the background to 'OneWebDay' which is being co-ordinated by Susan Crawford (ICANN board member). ISOC has agreed to sponsor 'OneWebDay' but also to invite ISOC chapters to participate, to use the event as an opportunity to showcase the great work being done by chapters but also to highlight the Internet rather than just the web. So this event is being seen as 'OneWebDay' in conjunction with ISOC chapters. The purpose of the call was to share information about the planned activities of other chapters and to brainstorm potential activities. ISOC is also happy to publicise on a global level any events undertaken by the chapters and to support chapters with Marketing material if this is needed. Terry also mentioned that we were not looking to recreate the Internet Fiesta's of the past, but really to use this as an opportunity to showcase the chapters. Holly asked if the activities should largely be web based? It was replied that this was not a necessary restriction - we are trying to make it broader than just the web. But related to that if we could have a video record of your event then this would be a great communications asset and could be used to profile the work of chapters. Nava introduced the background to the event in Israel. Firstly she commented that they decided to celebrate on October 22 rather than September 22nd as this date is a National Holiday in Israel, with Yom Kippur. They going to run a series of training sessions in different community centres in peripheral areas of Israel. They will be offering training in how to use email, the web and blogging (and other things). The training will be provided by youth who will be giving their time for free. They will videotape their activities. Nava also explained that in addition, they are starting a project with WikiMedia in Israel to gather a large photo database celebrating 60 years of independence. The pictures will be free of copyright and they will be working with Creative commons as well as WikiMedia Israel. They have also done a lot of work in the area of web accessibility. Holly commented that in ISOC AU they have a task group on web accessibility and have done a lot of work in this area. It was suggested that a potential area for a co-ordinated activity across ISOC chapters in the future might be the area of 'web accessiblity'. It was also noted that ISOC in fact has a chapter in the area of Disability and Special Needs and work could be co- ordinated with them. Christopher mentioned that ISOC Wallonia has had some events in the area of web 2.0 and has focussed activities around the theme of 'social interaction on the web'. Next year, they are planning a conference on promoting the role of women in the Information Society as actors of development for the global challenges. Dawit commented that he has not heard a great deal from the African chapters to date, but that he will raise it with them on their monthly IMM calls. Nava commented that perhaps the "internet peace ambassadors" project could be included as a 'one web day' activity. (the internet peace ambassadors project encouragees young Israeli and Arab schoolchildren to make friends over the Internet). Action itemsNava was going to send information about ISOC IL 'one web day' Christopher was going to send information regarding the ISOC Wallonie web 2.0 activities and the 2008 conference to the mailing list (done). Next stepsIt was agreed that a follow up meeting would be useful to further share information and co-ordinate. |
