Introductions and welcome

Terry welcomed the participants to the call. Terry explained the background to 'OneWebDay' which is being co-ordinated by Susan Crawford (ICANN board member). ISOC has agreed to sponsor 'OneWebDay'
but also to invite ISOC chapters to participate, to use the event as an opportunity to showcase the great work being done by chapters but also to highlight the Internet rather than just the web. So this event is being seen as 'OneWebDay' in conjunction with ISOC chapters.

The purpose of the call was to share information about the planned activities of other chapters and to brainstorm potential activities.
ISOC is also happy to publicise on a global level any events undertaken by the chapters and to support chapters with Marketing material if this is needed.

Mike Todd spoke about the planned activities for ISOC LA in leading up to OneWebDay. They are setting up a number of meetings at schools, community centres and businesses with technical experts who will be giving presentations on the technical aspects of how the Internet works and who the players are.

Enrique commented that ISOC Colombia participated in the Internet Fiestas some years ago but that lately there had not been much enthusiasm for this so they had decided not to do them. For OneWebDay however they are planning to have a forum inside the chapter to review what they want to do. They have received a communication from the Ministry of Communications in Colombia asking them to look at ways of increasing Internet "participation" in Colombia. In response they are reviewing what they will do. They are also planning to hold training/seminars/workshops for free in different cities to expose people to the Internet.

Veni commented that in Bulgaria for 'one web day' they will work with other organisations to put on some events - however they will also choose another day as September 22nd is a big holiday in Bulgaria.
The person organising it is actually on holiday right now, so Veni did not have more details. In 2006 they also celebrated 'Onewebday'.
They got together with people from the media and talked about how the web had changed their lives. It was a very practical, low tech event which focussed on how the web has helped people go about their daily lives.

Sebastian said that the Peruvian chapter was planning to do something but that they had not yet decided.

Marcin commented that they had originally were thinking of something 'offline' in doing something outdoors and to focus on the negative aspects of the Internet like 'Privacy'. However they have changed their mind and have decided to do something that promotes the the more positive aspects of the Internet along the lines of 'moments of awareness or magic of the Internet". They will develop and distribute posters and other marketing material and probably some short presentations.

All chapter delegates were encouraged to share their activities on the mailing list.

Marcin also asked if they should put information on the 'OneWebDay'
wiki on the OWD website. The answer was yes, however Terry said he would enquire as to whether we could have an ISOC place more visible on the website.

Next steps

  • chapter delegates to share information about their planned activities on the 'onewebday@elists.isoc.org' mailing list.
  • Terry to enquire with Susan if ISOC can have a place on the OWD wiki
  • Establish a follow up call towards the end of August to further share experiences.
