One Web Day Planning and Brainstorming Meetings

Notes taken by Dawit Bekele
Chair: Terry Monroe

Group 1 UTC 10.30, August 30th 2007

Present:

Yaovi Atohoun, ISOC Benin
Christopher Wilkinson, ISOC Wallonie (arrived at the end due to technical problems)
Terry Monroe, ISOC staff
Dawit Bekele, ISOC staff
Anne Lord, ISOC staff

Introductions and welcome

Terry Monroe welcomed the participants. Christopher Wilkinson had difficulties in connecting and joined the meeting late. Yaovi presented the activities planned by Benin for the One Web Day. Yaovi said that ISOC Benin plans to have the following activities for the One Web Day:

  1. Encourage cybercafés to give free service for that day. ISOC Benin will publish in newspapers the name and addresses of the cybercafés that are wiling to do so.
  2. Providing free Internet access points in town.
  3. Have a one hour or so TV program about the Internet, on that day.

He said that there will be a meeting of the chapter next week to finalize the plans.

The other participants said that the ideas are very simple and very good. In order to encourage other chapters in Africa and around the word to do something to celebrate the day, Yaovi said he would write their plans up. These will be publicized by ISOC and the African Bureau. Terry also insisted that the TV program will be particularly interesting for the Communications department. Anne suggested that Yaovi writes their activities on the One Web Day wiki at: http://onewebday.org/wiki/index.php/ISOC and to the ISOC ‘One Web Day’ mailing list to share with other chapters at ‘onewebday@elists.isoc.org’.

Terry asked if other chapters in Africa plan to celebrate the One Web day. Dawit answered that he didn’t get any response to the E-mail he sent to the African chapters after the previous similar meeting. He commented that next year, the promotion should start early and that it should be done during face to face as well as other interactive meetings and not just by E-mail.

Action items

Yaovi will write a small report on the plans of ISOC Benin for the One Web Day, within the coming week. Yaovi will also send any documents on the actual event (video, newspaper coverage, etc.) once the event has taken place to the African Bureau.

Group 2 UTC 21.30, August 30th 2007

Present:

Andrew Molivurae, PICISOC
Carlos Vera Quintana, ISOC Ecquador
Terry Monroe, ISOC staff
Sebastian Bellagamba, ISOC staff
Anne Lord, ISOC staff

Introductions and welcome

Terry Monroe welcomed the participants and in particular Andrew Molivurae from PICISOC, who joined the call for the first time. The purpose of the call is to share information about planned activities for 'OneWebDay'. Carlos Vera Quintana from ISOC Ecquador joined the call briefly but had technical problems and dropped off.

Andrew explained that PICISOC has just decided to celebrate 'OneWebDay' so he was looking for information and ideas to take back to the Board who will discuss what they will actually do. Anne explained that the idea is not just to celebrate the web but to think more broadly in the context of how the Internet has changed peoples lives and furthermore to use the occasion to showcase the chapter.

Terry updated Andrew on planned activities at ISOC Benin:

  1. Encourage cybercafés to give free service for that day. ISOC Benin will publish in newspapers the name and addresses of the cybercafés that are wiling to do so.
  2. Providing free Internet access points in town.
  3. Have a one hour or so TV program about the Internet, on that day.

Andrew asked for ideas of activities and Anne referred him to the minutes from this previous meeting in July as well as the One Web Day wiki where everyone is sharing their ideas. She also mentioned that it is possible to do some very low tech things and mentioned the activities of ISOC Mauritius with their essay or run a blog for people to describe how the web/Internet has changed peoples lives.

Finally there was a reminder to share details of any planned activities on the ISOC ‘One Web Day’ mailing list with other chapters at ‘onewebday@elists.isoc.org’ and to update the OneWebDay wiki.
