Internet Society Chapter NewsNigeria ChapterNine IT centers dedicated to the memory of Jon Postel
IT center commissioned, dedicated to the memory of Jon Postel Since the inception of the Nigeria Chapter, we have started to promote and diffuse the Internet in Nigeria through seminars, courses and conferences. At the same time we have sensitized Corporate Bodies and Government of the need to assist and Sponsor IT projects. Last year we were able to launch an IT center donated to the University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria for a value of $50,000 USD. Presently we were able to involve another sponsor for a project to donate another IT center to the Port Harcourt Branch of Nigerian Society of Engineers. The center will be a 40 square foot air conditioned portakabin equipped with 8 Computers, printers, accessories, and a satellite Internet connection with a speed of 200Kbps-600Kbps. The cost of the entire project, which will be sustained by the sponsor, is estimated to be $25,000 USD. Like the first project the center will be dedicated to the memory of Jon Postel because of the tremendous impact that Jon had on Internet. I like to remember him as, "A net builder that loved inventions more than profit." He should be seen as a milestone on the diffusion of the Internet in the world, without regard for the geographical area. This project was comissioned on May 17, 2003; we hope to launch a another project for The University of Port Harcourt, before the end of this year, and we have already contacted a potential sponsor.
