Internet Society Chapter NewsNigeria Chapter > Return to Summary
Dear Members of the Internet Society Community, I am delighted to inform you that on Saturday, 15, July, 2006, ISOC NIGERIA CHAPTER commissioned another project that is part of the Jon Postel's IT centers programme. The IT/Training Center is located at Rumuchorlu Community, Obio-Akpor LGA, Rivers State, Nigeria. This last center has been made possible thanks to various donors. Unlike the other projects, this time we chose to donate the center directly to a Community(Rumuchorlu Community) to make an impact directly to people like elders, women and other members of the Community. This to actualize the ISOC motto that said "Internet is for everyone". Many Community members, the Governor of Rivers State representative in the person of the Commissioner for Local Governments and the Rumuchorlu Council of Chiefs, were at the occasion. This is the first Community in Nigeria that has its own IT/Training Center and the importance of this was stressed in the various speeches by the Commissioner and by the Rumuchorlu Community Paramount ruler Eze Chorlu the VII. The center comprises:
The IT center is aimed to help specifically the youth and all the community members at large for better development. The site is located in the Niger-Delta region, where infrastructures like this one are required to bring development among the population in order to maintain peace in the area. The present project has an approximate cost of US$ 25000. The IT Center has been dedicated to the Memory of Jon Postel and our late first president Prof. T.C.Nwodo. This is the ninth IT center commissioned on this program since its inception on 2002. We are planning for this year to establish another two IT centers located in other Nigerian Universities. Sincerely
