Conferences and EventsInternet Society IPv6 Panel @ IETF 80Location: Prague, Czech Republic, Hilton Prague, Grand Ballroom Topic: IPv6 -- How will we know we've arrived? As the IANA free pool of IPv4 addresses has now been emptied, and each of the world's RIRs is working with its final allocation of IPv4 addresses to assign in region -- deploying IPv6, and ensuring IPv4/IPv6 coexistence is no longer a laughing matter, but a practical requirement. But, as IPv6 numbers (traffic, availability, etc) are still vanishingly small compared to the traditional IPv4 network, what kinds of milestones are we looking for to measure the success of IPv6 deployment and the Internet's continued success? One possible target is: 20% IPv6 traffic by end of 2011. Still a stretch goal, the point is that there must be a significant amount of IPv6 traffic in order to convince content providers and access network operators that IPv6 is business-viable and well beyond the stage of experimental technology. What are other signposts along the way? What are targets for 2013, 2017, and beyond? Panelists will discuss different viewpoints of what constitutes "success" in IPv6 deployment from their perspective -- content provider, access network operator, developer.
