The Internet Society (ISOC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1992 to provide leadership in Internet-related standards, education, and policy. With offices in Washington DC, USA, and Geneva, Switzerland and staff located around the globe, ISOC is dedicated to ensuring the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of people throughout the world. The Internet Society provides leadership in addressing issues that confront the future of the Internet, serves as the organizational home for the groups responsible for Internet infrastructure standards, acts as a global clearinghouse for Internet information and education, and facilitates and coordinates Internet-related initiatives around the world focused on enabling access, building InterNetWorks, and ensuring trust and identity.

About the Position

This is a full-time Director level position reporting to Trust & Identity Initiatives. The successful applicant will provide leadership that drives effective relationships with technologists, developers, regulators, end users, and other stakeholders working on issues relating to online identity and privacy. The individual selected for the Technical Outreach position will also lead efforts to create effective tools, including presentations, documents, and software, to communicate key issues to key stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Solution Leadership
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subject matter experts, working groups, and organizations focused on the technical issues relating to online identity and privacy.
    • Organize and facilitate broad stakeholder consultation on existing, near-future, and long-range technology solutions.
    • Support technical solutions to issues relating to online identity and privacy that are aligned with the ISOC vision, mission, and strategy.
  • Solution Advocacy & Education
    • Speak and present at topical conferences about the technical issues and solutions relating to online identity and privacy.
    • Facilitate and promote multi-stakeholder consultations and workshops, producing reports on the output for various audiences.
    • Lead the development of software tools and related projects that facilitate a broad understanding of issues relating to online identity and privacy.
    • Support the development of educational materials relating to online identity and privacy for use within other ISOC programs.
    • Serve as a subject matter expert to the internal and extended ISOC community on issues relating to online identity and privacy.
  • Global Policy Analysis & Support
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with regulators, global policy and standards organizations and their diverse members.
    • Provide technical subject matter expertise and guidance to regulators, global policy organizations, and standards bodies on issues relating to online identity and privacy.
    • Collaborate with Internet Society Public Policy Staff, Chapters, and organizational members to advance the Internet Society agenda for identity and privacy.
  • Strategic Input and Support
    • Provide subject matter expertise for strategic planning on issues relating to online identity and privacy.
    • Support executing on the operational tasks of the strategic plans.
    • Responsible for helping to set and manage an operational budget.
    • Responsible for managing key contractors including software developers, project managers, and technical writers.

Desired Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of and experience with issues relating to online identity and privacy.
  • Familiarity with resources and community contacts specific to issues relating to online identity and privacy.

  • The experience, poise, and confidence necessary to represent the Internet Society effectively and professionally in various settings, including international forums.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad spectrum of people and groups in an international setting, including governments, national and international standards organizations, civil society and private sector groups.
  • Experience writing policy and technical documents for a range of audiences.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing, when working in groups, and when presenting in front of an audience.
  • Fluency in English is a must. Proficiency in one or more additional languages is desirable.
  • Ability to support frequent domestic and international travel is required.

Compensation for this position will be competitively commensurate with the successful applicant's qualifications.
