1999 Board Election

Interim Report of the ISOC Trustees Nominating Committee

19 December 1998 - Selection of Internet Society Board Candidates Announced

On 26 February 1999, ballots will be posted for the election of new Internet Society Trustees. Election Day is scheduled for 3 May 1999, when received ballots will be opened and tallied. Internet Society members will be asked to elect FIVE Trustees who will each serve a three year term. 1. Procedures

Internet Society members will be asked to elect FIVE Trustees each of whom will serve a three year term.

The nominations period for selected candidates commenced on 17 November 1998. Seven members served on the nominating committee. A quorum of 5 was needed to conduct business. A slate of 10 candidates was nominated.

Twenty-eight (28) candidates were identified for consideration by the nominating committee and all were asked to confirm their willingness and ability to serve and to provide biographies for consideration by the nominating committee. The committee has selected an initial slate of 10 candidates to be placed on the ballot.

Additional candidates for election to the Board of Trustees may be nominated by membership petition and filed with the Chair of the Nominating Committee no later than 22 January 1999. A petition for the 1999 election will require the signatures of 68 voting ISOC members (see section 3 of this report for details).

Election procedures will be announced at the time the final slate of candidates is announced on 29 January 1999.

3. Nominations by Petition

This announcement also invites additional nominations by membership petition for candidates for the 1999 Trustee Elections.

Candidates for ISOC Trustee should have a demonstrable involvement in the Internet. Such involvement may, for example, range from participation as a technology developer, researcher, user, network operator, policy maker (e.g. in government), to sponsor of research and development.

Additional nominations for candidates in the election may be made by petition OF THE CANDIDATE, filed with the Nominating Committee. Completed petitions must be received by 12:00 Midnight, Eastern Standard Time (-5 GMT) 22 January 1999.

Successful petitions must include the "signatures" of at least 68 voting members of the Society. An acceptable format of a "signature" is:

* the voting member's name and email address; or
* the voting member's name and Internet society membership number

The petition message should include the written consent of the individual being nominated through this petition process, and a statement of interest.

Petition candidates should register their intention to gather signatures with the Nominations Committee at isoc-noms@isoc.org   Candidates may include their statement if they wish. All such candidates will be listed in periodic announcements to ISOC members.

Nominations by Petition

Additional nominations for election to the Board of Trustees may be made by petition filed with the Chair of the Nominating Committee no later than 30 days following the notification of individuals nominated by the committee. Petitions may be filed electronically. The Nominating Committee shall specify the  number of signatures of voting members required for petitions, which shall be at least fifty voting members of the Society, or 1% of the total number of voting members of the Society, whichever is greater.

Provision of a member's name and email address is acceptable as a valid signature for the purposes of signing a petition to support a petition candidate, subject to verification where the petition candidate achieves the necessary quota.
