Board of Trustees
2000 Board Election
Candidates
Wawa A. Ngenge

Nominated by: Jeff
Smith <jasmith@well.com>
Country: Cameroon
I am willing to serve
in the capacity of trustee of ISOC if elected. I am currently National
Coordinator for the UNDP's Sustainable Development Networking Programme
in Cameroon (SDNP: www.sdnp.undp.org/sdncmr). Some of the work I have
spearheaded at SDNP Cameroon has been considered as a success story by
both SDNP New York (www.sdnp.undp.org/stories) and NETAID, the UNDP-CISCO
initiative to use the Internet in the fight against poverty, which was
launched in September 1999.
In addition, I am
a member of the Provisional ISTF Internet Societal Steering Group (ISSG),
Vice President of the nascent ISOC Chapter for Cameroon, and member of
the Technical Advisory Committee of the African Development Forum thread
on "The Challenge to Africa of Globalization and the Information
Age", which was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in October 1999, and
for which we are now designing concrete follow-up actions. The ADF is
sponsored by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
I have submitted,
on the basis of that work and others, a proposal for the use of information
technology for poverty alleviation and sustainable development in Cameroon
to UNDP, which has already agreed to fund a three-month preparatory phase
(1 Jan - 31 Mar 2000) to further develop the idea into a ful-fledged programme
of cooperation between the UNDP and the Cameroonian government in this
domain.
Most of my internet
related work to date has been on the search for ways and means of increasing
access to the internet, both technology and content as well as community
networking, the evaluation of internet connectivity needs for NGOs in
Cameroon, the promotion of open source software, Linux in particular.
I cannot think of anything else to tell you at this time. I am available
for any additional information you might need for your assessment work.
Regards
Wawa
