This is a nomination for the Board of Trustees of the Internet Society. I have been involved in the Internet for more than ten years, first as a user, then as a technology developer and policy maker (for the Department of Defence) and now as an academic (at The Australian National University) and private consultant. I was a founding member and a director of the Australian chapter (Internet Society of Australia).

Brief Biographical Notes

Tom Worthington is a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the Australian National University. He is an electronic business consultant, author and information technology professional, with 17 years experience in information technology, including nine years on high level IT policy and five in Internet applications.

Tom is one of the primary architects of the Commonwealth Government's Internet and web strategy. The first Web Master for the Australian Department of Defence from March 1995 to May 1997, he then took charge of Internet/Intranet policy for both the Department of Defence and the Australian Defence Force. He designed the web pages for the Defence and Defence Industry, Science and Personnel ministers.

In June 1999 Mr. Worthington completed a six month assignment with Defence's Y2K team, working on technical issues in planning re-mediation of the Year 2000 problem in Defence information systems. In July 1999 he left government service to become an independent IT consultant.

Information Age magazine has listed Mr. Worthington as one of the 10 most influential IT&T people in Australia, citing his work on national IT policy. In 1999 he was elected a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society for his contribution to the development of public Internet policy. Tom has appeared before three Senate hearings on Internet regulation and established the first web home pages for the ACT Government, the Special Broadcasting Service, Australian Information Industry Association and the National Press Club. His first book, Net Traveller was released in July 1999.

Tom is a director and past President of the Australian Computer Society and a voting member of the Association for Computing Machinery. He is a member of the Council of Standards Australia.
