Ernst Messmer

Ernst Messmer@lombardodier.com

Born in 1948 of Swiss nationality, I have worked successively for the Aarhus University Computing Centre in Denmark, the Geneva University Hospital in Switzerland as chief systems engineer instrumental in the design of the pioneering hospital information system Diogene and since 1987 for the Geneva private bank Lombard Odier & Cie, where I was in charge of IT as Chief Information Officer from 1992 to 2001. I am now heading the newly created LOClab, a small IT research team investigating technology trends in financial services and contributing to the definition of Lombard Odier's IT strategy.

With over three decades of broad experience in systems engineering, telecommunications and applications development as applied to academic research, health care and financial services, I also have developed a keen sense of social and ethical responsibility regarding the implications of the novel use of technology.

Given the rapidly growing impact of Internet over the last years with the advent of the web, its truly global reach and potential for affecting not only industrially advanced nations but also contributing to the welfare of developing countries, it was only natural for me to advocate the sponsoring of INET'98 by the Geneva Financial Centre as primary sponsor when we were contacted by the then President Don Heath and conference committee chairs George Sadowsky and Mark Selby.
