Call for Nominations for the Internet Society Board of Trustees

10 December 2009 - The Nominations Committee seeks statements of interest from individuals who wish to join the Board of Trustees.

The Internet Society (ISOC) is a global not-for-profit organization founded in 1992 to provide leadership in Internet related standards, education and policy. With offices in Washington, D.C., and Geneva, Switzerland, it is dedicated to ensuring the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of people throughout the world. ISOC is the organizational home of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and other Internet-related bodies who together play a critical role in ensuring that the Internet develops in a stable and open manner. ISOC has more than 80 organizational members and more than 28,000 individuals in 80 chapters that play a role in driving the mission and work of the organization. In 2009, ISOC’s operational budget is $20 million USD.

The ISOC Board of Trustees is responsible for the governance of the organization, and its authority is derived from the organization’s by-laws and policies. The Board consists of 12 Trustees that are either appointed or elected by the chapters, organization members and the Internet Architecture Board (IAB). In accordance with ISOC’s Procedures for the Selection of Trustees, six Trustees are elected by the organizational members, three Trustees are elected by the chapters and three Trustees are appointed by the IAB. Trustees serve a three year term and can serve no more than two consecutive terms.

Time Commitment

Trustees are expected to commit the time necessary to perform regular Board and committee business. Trustees are also expected to allocate some time to attend and prepare for meetings. The ISOC Board of Trustees holds three physical meetings and two 2-hour teleconference meetings annually.

Board Openings

In 2010, three positions on the Board of Trustees are open for election. Two Trustees will be elected by ISOC Organizational Members and one by ISOC Chapters. The Trustee positions are 3-year terms that start June 2010 and expire June 2013.

Eligibility

Candidates for ISOC Trustee should have demonstrable involvement in the Internet, particularly in the areas of standards, public policy or development. Ideally, candidates should also have a good understanding of technology, policy, business and/or economics.

The following qualifications are also highly desirable:

• Previous Board experience or organizational leadership experience;
• Skills in business management and leadership;
• Ability to raise funds for not-for-profit organizations;
• not-for-profit experience;
• The ability to identify relevant ISOC projects and obtain funds or other resources to accomplish them;
• Vision for the role of the Internet Society.

Candidates should be active members of the Internet Society or be willing to seek membership in the Internet Society.

Timeline

Nominations are due January 11, 2010 and should be sent to the Nominations Committee using the web form.

Self-nominations, agreed nominations and suggestions are all welcome. Please be sure to include a Statement of Interest and a Resume or one-page narrative Bio.
