ISOC joins panel discussing future of global Internet regulation

7 August 2008 - ISOC's Bill Graham, responsible for Strategic Global Engagement, will this month join a high level panel to discuss issues of Internet governance and regulatory questions.

The event "The Internet - How It is Governed Today and How it May Be Governed Tomorrow: A VIP Panel Discusses the Internet Governance Forum of the United Nations and the Global Debate About the Control and Future of the Internet" will be held by the American Bar Association (ABA) in New York City on Saturday 9 August 2008.

Joining Mr Graham on the panel will be Paul Twomey, President & CEO of ICANN; Richard Beaird, Senior Deputy U.S. Coordinator, Information and Communications Policy, U.S. Department of State; and Markus Kummer, Executive Coordinator, Internet Governance Forum (IGF).

In the context of the complex, multi-stakeholder environment of the IGF, the panel will consider:

  • The pros and cons of this international process
  • What the key issues are likely to be in the years to come (including the next meetings of the IGF in Hyderabad, India in December 2008 and Cairo, Egypt in 2009)
  • Who the main players are in this process, including the role of the US government
  • Why the IGF and ICANN matter so deeply to US businesses and their legal counsel.

The panel is organized by the Internet Governance Task Force of the Cyberspace Law Committee of the Section of Business Law and is co-sponsored by the International Business Law Committee of the Section of Business Law and the International Coordinating Committee of the Section of Business Law.
