ISOC chapters will hold events that day recognizing the Internet’s positive impact on their local communities in conjunction with OneWebDay. The Internet helps people communicate, learn and create. In addition, the technology has become an indispensable tool for commerce, government and other organizations. “With the rapid growth of the Internet in the past decade,” says Lynn St. Amour, president of the Internet Society, “it is worth pausing to appreciate the many benefits we derive from this transforming technology.” The Internet Society recognizes that OneWebDay is an opportune time to appreciate how the seamless end-to-end connectivity of the Internet provides an abundance of benefits to those fortunate enough to have access. “While many of us have benefited greatly from the development of the Internet, one of the goals of the Internet Society is to extend these benefits to more people around the world,” added Ms. St. Amour. Through its community of individual members and 80-plus chapters worldwide, the Internet Society is in an ideal position to bring attention to the global impact of the Internet and its tremendous potential for the future. Local celebrations include, “Day of fair access to the Internet” in ISOC Colombia, where public kiosks and workshops on basic Internet access will be delivered to people of all ages and economic status to introduce them to the Internet. In Africa, ISOC Benin will offer free public access to the Internet and participate in an open debate about developing access to the Internet on a national television show. Additional local ISOC chapters holding events in conjunction with OneWebDay include, ISOC Chennai-India, ISOC Ecuador, ISOC Los Angeles-USA, ISOC Mauritius, ISOC Ghana, ISOC Pacific Islands Chapter, ISOC Poland, and ISOC Wallonie-Belgium. Several ISOC chapters will be holding their events on other dates.
