ISOC Fellows Join International Colleagues in Internet Standards Development at IETF Meeting in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA, 14 March 2008 - Six recipients of the Internet Society’s Fellowship to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) joined colleagues from around the world this week to work in the Internet's premier standards development forum.

Those selected as ISOC Fellows to the IETF for its 71st meeting were drawn from a strong field of almost 200 well-qualified applicants from the developing world.

"The ISOC Fellowship to the IETF is intended to allow engineers and technologists from the developing world to travel to and participate in the IETF meeting," explains Karen Rose, ISOC's Director of Education and Programs.

"The Internet Society is very grateful to the current sponsors of the program - Google, Afilias, and Intel," says Ms Rose. "By sponsoring this program, they are demonstrating their commitment to Internet standards development as well as showing support for technologists from developing countries."

Each person selected for the fellowship received full funding to travel to Philadelphia and participate in IETF 71. In addition, each Fellow has been paired with a mentor from the community of experienced IETF participants. The Fellows are:

  • Mohibul Hasib Mahmud, from Dhaka, Bangladesh
    Manager, Network Routing, BRAC BDMail Network Ltd. (bracnet)
    Mentor: George Michaelson, Senior R&D Officer, APNIC
  • Asim Zaheer, from Punjab, Pakistan
    Engineering Group Manager, Mentor Graphics and part-time graduate student at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS)
    Mentor: Hesham Soliman, Director, Elevate Technologies
  • Max Larson Henry, from Port au Prince, Haïti
    Member of Faculté des Sciences, State University of Haïti
    Mentor: Stéphane Bortzmeyer, R&D engineer, AFNIC (Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the ".fr" DNS registry
  • Vincent Ngundi, from Nairobi, Kenya
    Administrative Manager, KeNIC (Kenya Network Information System)
    Mentor: Shane Kerr, Internet Operations Specialist, Afilias Canada
  • Dessalegn Mequanint Yehuala, from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
    Lecturer/Researcher, Computer Science Department, Addis Ababa University
    Mentor: Dave Meyer, Director, Cisco Systems
  • Mudivedu Shroff Rajesh ("Rajesh"), from Bangalore, India
    Network and Systems Administrator, Indian Institute of Science
    Mentor: Dave Knight, Internet Operations Specialist, Afilias Canada
