Internet Society Opens Application Period for Project Funding

RESTON, VA and GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - 30 April 2008 - The Internet Society (ISOC) is seeking applications for its next round of Internet-related Project Funding, with the next round of applications opening on 1 May 2008.

In 2005, ISOC initiated a Project Funding program, open to ISOC's Chapters and Individual members as a way to further ISOC's mission and goals and to encourage locally-based capacity building and Internet development in technical, educational, or policy fields.

Now in its third year, the Project Funding program has already supported over 40 projects in all regions of the world, impacting the local communities of end users and regional technologists.

Projects are awarded up to a maximum of US$10,000. To encourage sustainability, ISOC requires that at least 50 percent of the total project budget is provided from other sources of funding.

All ISOC Chapters and Individual members are encouraged to apply for Project Funding to support their projects which meet the formal criteria.

In December 2007, the ISOC Board of Trustees approved a set of longer term, more strategic activities, referred to as the "initiatives". The three initiatives are Enabling Access, InterNetWorks, and Trust & Identity. In addition to demonstrating consistency with ISOC mission and goals, preference is given to projects that fall within the three Major Strategic Initiatives and the corresponding program areas within each.

The deadline for applications is 2 June 2008.
