ISOC announces six awardees for its returning Fellows program

Program builds on the success of the ISOC Fellowship to the IETF

RESTON, VA, USA AND GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, 9 July 2008 - The Internet Society (ISOC) has announced the names of fellowship alumni selected as Returning Fellows to attend the next two Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) meetings: IETF 72 Dublin; IETF 73 Minneapolis.

ISOC awarded a total of six Fellowships to qualified alumni; three Fellowships for IETF 72, in Dublin, Ireland, from 27 July - 1 August 2008, and three for IETF 73, in Minneapolis, USA, from 16 - 21 November 2008. The recipients come from five countries, including one Returning Fellow each from Mongolia, Bangladesh, Mauritius, and Moldova and two Returning Fellows from Uruguay.

With so many benefits provided in a first-time fellowship to the IETF, Returning Fellows have the opportunity to leverage their initial IETF experience - contributing more information into the IETF standards processes about their particular regional needs, while helping build their local communities by getting engaged in standards tracks that have important implications for regional Internet growth. Their attendance at the meetings also increases the visibility of the IETF in developing countries.

"The Returning Fellows Program provides the opportunity for select motivated ISOC Fellowship alumni to attend another IETF meeting," said Karen Rose, Director of Education and Programs at the Internet Society. "We created the returning fellowship as a means to provide additional professional development for fellowship alumni and increase the IETF's visibility among technologists in developing countries."

"I am pleased to be returning to the IETF under this program," said Subramanian Moonesamy, Consultant. "It helps me highlight to others in Mauritius and in developing countries that the IETF is an open organisation where anyone can actively participate and influence the way Internet standards are developed."

"My work at the IETF will further enhance the viability of the local Internet communities throughout Mauritius and Africa," he said.

The selected Returning ISOC IETF Fellows are:
