ISOC conducted a survey of organisational members in December 2006, focusing on member perceptions of ISOC, its current programs and services, and member interest in potential future programs and services. The survey was sent to 140 individuals representing 80+ organization members, with 43 responding to the survey, representing all segments of the membership.

Summary of results

Importance of ISOC to their organisation

A significant majority of members (71%) ranked ISOC's efforts to support the work of the IETF as significant to their organisation. This was followed by ISOC's participation in public policy (38%).

In terms of ISOC's three main program pillars (standards, policy and education), members responded as follows:
- 82% of members strongly agree that the standards setting work of the IETF is "critical to the future development of Internet infrastructure and applications." and 70% strongly agreed that it "is important to ensuring an open Internet."

- 55% strongly agree that government policies that support an open Internet "promotes economic development and growth, particularly in developing countries;

- 40% strongly agree that ISOC's education and training programs "build technical expertise that supports capacity building in developing countries.

Utilisation of ISOC Programs & Services

Members kept informed of ISOC's programs and activities primarily through e-mail messages from ISOC staff (62% frequently read email)and the monthly ISOC member newsletter (55% frequently). This was followed by visiting the ISOC website (52% sometimes).

Opinion of ISOC Website

While the overall response to the ISOC website was favorable (75%), issues were raised on specific area, including (1) the website is difficult to navigate; (2) the information is not current or irrelevant.

Subject Areas of Interest

Members ranked their interest in gaining more information on the following
topics: Internet governance, cybersecurity, the future of the Internet, Ipv^, DNSSEC, IDN, spam, Web 3.0 and 3G. Interest in 3G ranked higher among product provider members.

Potential Member Services

Organisation members ranked as follows their interest in future member
services: (1) webcasts with industry thought leaders; (2) ISOC e-newsletter (focussing on industry issues and ISOC news); (3) networking opportunities with other members; (4) member subgroups; (5) web applications to enable collaboration with other members; (6) monthly member calls.
