2001 Internet Society Board of Trustees Elections

Interim Report of the Nominations Committee - 05 January 2001

On 19 February 2001, ballots will be posted for the election of new Internet Society Trustees. Voting members, whose memberships are current and valid on 5 February 2001, will receive ballots and will be able to vote either electronically or on paper. Internet Society members will be asked to elect five trustees to serve three year terms. Election Day is scheduled for 23 April 2001, when received ballots will be opened and tallied.

Procedures for the Nomination and Election of Trustees are available at http://www.isoc.org/members/vote/2001election/ .

Each voting member will be entitled to as many votes as there are Trustee positions to be filled by vote of the members, but members cannot cast more than one vote for any one candidate for the Board of Trustees. A member may use fewer than the total number of votes available if he or she so chooses.

The nominations period for selected candidates commenced on 13 November 2000. Forty (40) individuals were identified for consideration by the Nominating Committee. Each individual was asked to confirm his or her willingness and ability to serve and to provide biographies for review by the Nominating Committee. The Committee had a very difficult task as there were so many fine prospective candidates and only 10 to be selected. We had one of the most outstanding groups of people submitted for consideration of any ISOC election. This bodes well for ISOC, as it shows the willingness of more and more of these busy people to actively support its mission.

The committee has selected an initial slate of 10 candidates to be placed on the ballot:

1. Fred Baker - USA
2. Esther Dyson - USA
3. Don Heath - USA
4. Latif Ladid - Morocco/Luxembourg
5. Veni Markovski - Bulgaria
6. Kees Neggers - Netherlands
7. O.O. Oruye - Nigeria
8. Kenichi Ohmae - Japan
9. George Sadowsky - USA
10. Florencio Utreras - Chile

This announcement also invites additional nominations by membership petition for candidates for the 2001 Trustee Elections. Candidates for ISOC Trustee should have a demonstrable involvement in the Internet. Such involvement may, for example, range from participation as a technology developer, researcher, user, network operator, policy maker (e.g. in government), to sponsor of research and development.

Additional nominations for candidates in the election may be made by petition OF THE CANDIDATE, filed with the Nominating Committee. Petition candidates should register their intention to gather signatures with the Nominating Committee at nomcom2001@isoc.org and should include a statement of his or her willingness and ability to devote an appropriate level of time to the activities associated with the position of Trustee of the Internet Society. All candidates seeking to petition will be listed in periodic announcements to ISOC members and at http://www.isoc.org/members/vote/2001election/ Each person seeking to petition will be assigned an email address and members wishing to support the candidate will send a message to that candidate's petition address stating his or her support for the candidate. In order to qualify for the ballot, 78 members of the Internet Society must state their support of the candidate. The message should include the member's name, ISOC member number, and the name of the candidate whose petition the member is supporting. Petitions must be completed and filed by midnight U.S. Eastern (-5 GMT) 5 February 2001. The final candidate announcement will be made on 12 February 2001.

Respectfully submitted,

The 2001 ISOC Nominating Committee:

Marty Burack, Chair (burack@isoc.org)- USA
Vint Cerf - USA
Cecilia Jorgensen - Belgium
Giandomenico Massari - Nigeria
