World Class Educational Professionals to Lead K-12 Networking Workshop at INET '97 Conference In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Washington, D.C. -- May 12, 1997-- Internationally renowned leaders in the Internet education field will lead the Internet Society's K-12 Networking Workshop at INET 97 on June 24, 1997 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Workshop will focus on a broad range of technical and non-technical issues surrounding deployment and use of the Internet in schools around the world and is appropriate for educators and educational policy makers. The world class educators and technologists serving on the workshop panel will address a variety of pertinent education issues such as school reform, practical strategies for using the Internet to support professional development for teachers and how the Internet impacts the school's curriculum.

This Workshop will provide educators, government officials and internetworking professionals with practical information about the Internet's development and use in the classroom," said Donald M. "The conference itself will serve to promote and maintain a broad spectrum of activities focused on the Internet's development, availability and associated technologies."

The international assemblage of world-class speakers who will be presenting at the Workshop includes: Jean Armor Polly, author of the Internet Kids Yellow Pages; Tracy LaQuey Parker, author of The Internet Companion: A Beginner's Guide to Global Networking; Al Weis, President and CEO of Advanced Network & Services and founder of the ThinkQuest program; Jim Williams, Executive Director of the Federation of American Research Networks; Susan Calcari, the InterNIC NetScout; principal investigators and project directors from three of the National Science Foundation's major large-scale Networking Infrastructure for Education projects in the U.S., and leading educational technologists from Europe and Asia.

One series of K-12 Workshop presentations will address school reform and the renewal of teaching and learning through the use of Internetworking technology, with a focus on practical lessons. Founders and directors of the major international networking projects for students will describe their program and provide instructions on how Malaysian teachers and students can become involved with students from around the world in the CyberFair, ThinkQuest, KidLink and KIDS projects. Experienced educational technologists will share specific strategies for addressing the professional development and ongoing support needs of teachers. Also, there will be sessions addressing the implementation and usage of the Internet in schools.

The other pre-conference programs are: The Developing Countries Workshop, a seven day program (June 15-22) at the Permata Training Center in suburban Kuala Lumpur. This practical program will focus on assisting professionals in countries who are in the process of developing or enhancing their initial national Internet infrastructure. And the African Network Symposium will address issues affecting Internet development in Africa on Tuesday, June 24.
