The Internet Society has arranged a slate of pre-and post-conference tours for INET 97 registrants. These tours emphasize culture, people, flora and fauna, with the selection for all ages and economic standing.

Tour Booking and Questions

INET 97 registrants must book tours directly with Asian Overland Services, the official INET 97 Tour Agency. If you have any questions regarding a tour, contact them directly. (Note: Please do not contact the Internet Society if you have questions about tours or tours that you have booked).

Book as early as possible by sending a letter, fax, or e-mail describing your tour requirements to:

  7. Payment: Credit Card, Check, Wire Transfer or Bank Order
Once a tour booking and payment are received, a confirmation will be sent to you prior to departure. Ticketing and instructions are normally issued two weeks before date of travel. Your confirmation will include a day-to-day itinerary plus information on climate, visas, vaccinations, clothing, personal gear and information on the areas to which you will be traveling.

Tour Changes
Should you wish to alter your arrangements after your original booking, you should notify Asian Overland Tours in writing and they will try to accommodate you. However, due to additional administrative work involved, they may be obliged to make a charge of US $15.00 per change.

Cancellation and Refunds
If it is necessary to cancel your holiday, all moneys will be refunded, less a cancellation fee as follows:

Between 45-31 days before departure...10%
Between 30-21 days before departure...25%
Between 20-08 days before departure...50%
Between 07-02 days before departure...75%
Less than 01 day or No-show..........100%

Not Included in Tour Prices
The following are not included in your tour price: visas, insurance, excess baggage over 28kg, airfares unless specified, meals unless specified, laundry, drinks, porterage, souvenirs, items of a personal nature, including medications, and international and domestic airport taxes unless specified.

Tour Departure
All tours are based on a combined minimum of two people booking a tour. (Example: If you sign-up for the Singapore Tour, and another INET 97 registrant also signs up for the Singapore Tour, then the Singapore Tour will proceed). Departure days have been stated for your attention.

Depending on the size of the tour, chartered vans and busses will be used.

It is customary that all travelers are adequately insured for the full duration of the tour they are participating, in case of illness, injury, death, loss of baggage and personal items, cancellations and curtailment, and physical injuries if participating in active land and sea-based holidays.

Hotels on Tour
If an increasing number of tourists arrive at a hotel stated in the itinerary, the hotel may not be available. Should this problem occur, a similar standard of hotel will be offered.

Day 01:
Asian Overland will pick up from your hotel in Kuala Lumpur for transfer to airport for your flight to Singapore. Upon arrival, transfer to the York Hotel (3-star). In the afternoon, tour the city with these places of interest: Little India, Empress Place, Sir Stamford Raffles statue, Victorian Empress Place Building, Victoria Theater and Chinatown. Return to hotel. Overnight.

Day 02:
Breakfast at hotel (included in tour). Morning tour of Sentosa Island. In the afternoon, visit Singapore's Discovery Island and Mount Faber, where one of the cable cars will carry you over the wooded slopes and a quarter mile of sea. On the island visit the wax museum, Festivals of Singapore, then take a ride on the monorail, which will pass the quiet beaches on the south side and through parts of Fort Siloso. Afternoon transfer to airport. Flight back to Kuala Lumpur. Tour ends. (Transfer to hotel is not included in the tour).

INET-02: Kuala Lumpur City Tour

This tour provides a thorough overview of Kuala Lumpur. Places of interest: Karyaneka Handicraft Center, Pudu Prison, Bird Sanctuary, Merdeka and National Stadiums, Chinatown and Central Market, Jamek Mosque (except on Fridays and religious days), National Monument, King's Palace, National Museum, Railway Station and Independence Square.

INET - 03: Shah Alam Tour & Kuala Lumpur Countryside Tour

In the morning, this tour passes through Petaling Jaya, arriving in Shah Alam in approximately 40 minutes. Visit Malaysia's Blue Mosque, capped by a massive dome covered in vitreous enamel. The mosque is reputed to be the largest religious dome in the World, capable of accommodating 20,000 worshippers. Also visit the famed Bukit Cahaya Agricultural Park and the spice garden, the mushroom farm, and the rice-fields, all in a natural setting of a tropical rainforest. The tour will stop for a Chinese lunch in Shah Alam before visiting a jade Showroom, the Royal Selangor Pewter Factory and showroom, a typical Malay house on stilts, a batik factory and showroom, and Batu Caves.

INET - 04: Historical Malacca

Malacca, located 160 km south of Kuala Lumpur, is the most important historical landmark in Malaysia; it was founded by Parameswara, a Hindu prince. Malacca was also ruled by the Portuguese, Dutch and English. The ruins and buildings of these conquerors can still be seen today, blending with the fast developing but carefully planned township. Among the places visited are Porta de Santiago, St. Paul's Church, the Stadhuys Building, Christchurch, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple (the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia), Jonker Street, a jade house showroom, and Bukit China (the largest historical cemetery outside of China).

Day 01:
Upon arrival in Sabah, depart your hotel for a 2-hour drive into Kinabalu Park at 1,524m. Check into the lodge and after lunch, explore one of the many trails that lead through the tropical Montane Oak and Chestnut Forrest. Kinabalu is a botanist's paradise with over a thousand species of orchids; the bird life is equally fascinating. Stay overnight at Wildlife Mountain Range. (Lunch and dinner).

Day 02:
Drive to Poring Hotsprings, an excellent place to view lowland birds and some mammals. A short trek to the Canopy Walkway, suspended between trees at a height of 40m, offers an excellent opportunity to observe wildlife and provides a birdÔs eye view of the Tropical Rainforest. At Poring Center, you will have a chance to soak in the hot sulfur waters renowned for its therapeutic properties. Return and overnight at Wildlife Mountain Lodge. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner).

Day 03:
Depart for a 4-hour drive to Kinabatangan River, passing through scenic countryside, rice fields, local villages and plantations. The lower reaches of the river has the greatest concentration of wildlife in Borneo. Wild orangutan, macaques, red and silver leaf monkeys, elephants, dozens of birds including several species of hornbill, crocodile, civet cats and others may all be sighted in this region. Take a boat trip to see the most famous creature, the bizarre Proboscis Monkeys, with large pendulous nose, fat belly and thick white tail, leaping forcefully into space and crashing into nearby trees. Overnight Sukau River Lodge. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner).

Day 04:
Wake up to the sound of Borneo. As the birds are most active at this time, take another boat trip, this time to the Ox-Bow lakes. The many and dramatic and beautiful birds of the region can be easily sighted: elegant egrets, several species of kingfishers, the oriental darter, colored Bee-eaters, and hornbills. Take a walk along one of the many nature trails to view birds and wildlife in the scenic riverine Rainforest. Overnight Sukau River Lodge. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner).

Day 05:
Cruise down the Kinabatangan River to the estuary by the coast and proceed to Sandakan via the mangrove swamp. The cruise takes four hours and numerous stops are made to observe animals, plants, and local native tribes and villages that build their settlement along the river. Wildlife commonly sighted are snakes, crabs, mid skippers, deer, crocodile, macaques, wild pigs, leaf monkeys and proboscis monkeys. Arrive Sandakan before sunset. Drop off at Sandakan airport to Kuala Lumpur. Tour ends (Breakfast and lunch). (Participants must arrange for transfer to hotel).

Items to Bring: sweater, hat, raincoat, good walking shoes, long sleeve shirt, t-shirt, long trousers, shorts, insect repellent, camera with fast film and sunglasses.

INET-06: Pangkor Break-A-Way

Day 01:
Arrive Sandakan with a flight from Kota Kinabalu. Depart by boat to Selingan Island for swimming, sunbathing or snorkeling (gear can be hired locally, subject to availability). In the night, wait for the famous Green and Hawksbill turtles to come ashore to lay eggs. Overnight in a simple chalet.

Day 02:
Morning return to Sandakan to check into the Ramada Renaissance Hotel. After lunch, proceed up the Kinabatangan River in search of the Probocis Monkey with the unusual long nose, endemic only to Borneo. They are remarkable to watch as they leap forcefully into space and land, crashing heavily into nearby trees. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 03:
In the early morning, visit the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary to look at the Orangutans, which have been orphaned, illegally captured and injured, being rehabilitated to be sent back to the wild. Transfer to airport.
